Why You Should Visit

Known locally as 'Kawachi no Harugoto', this festival marks the arrival of spring at Domyoji Tenmangu. It recalls Sugawara no Michizane stopping here on his way into exile while the rapeseed flowers were in bloom, and his aunt Kakuju-ni making yellow plum-shaped dumplings for him. These dumplings, the natane goku, are offered to the deity together with rapeseed blossoms. A children's procession winds through the grounds from 13:00 and an antique market is held the same day. The dumplings are available from 24 to 26 March, and the treasure hall displays items associated with Michizane.
