Why You Should Visit

An autumn festival in the old castle town of Takeda in Wadayama, Asago, at the foot of the Takeda Castle ruins. Twenty-one large and small festival floats known as "yassa" parade through town, and the night-time float jostling is said to be the most powerful in northern Hyogo. On the main day, every float gathers at Takeda Elementary School in the afternoon, and on both evenings the floats face off in front of JR Takeda Station. Every other year, Suwa Shrine's portable shrine also crosses the Maruyama River. The festival is usually held on the Saturday and Sunday just before Sports Day (the second Monday of October).

NOTE

Float face-offs

  • Eve (Sat): at night in front of JR Takeda Station, first the small floats, then the large floats
  • Main day (Sun): in the afternoon all floats gather at Takeda Elementary School; at night the small and then the large floats face off again in front of JR Takeda Station

*Times are announced each year by the Asago City Tourism Association and others

FAQ

When is the Takeda Autumn Festival held each year?
It is usually held on the Saturday (eve) and Sunday (main day) just before Sports Day, the second Monday of October. Each year's dates are announced by the Asago City Tourism Association and on the city's Takeda Castle page.
Can I see all the floats together at once?
Yes. On the main day (Sunday) afternoon, all the large and small floats gather at Takeda Elementary School for the face-off. In the evenings, the face-offs take place in front of JR Takeda Station on both days.
Can I also visit the Takeda Castle ruins on festival day?
Yes, but on the main day the roads are closed for the floats, so the castle can only be reached on foot: the Tenku Bus, Unkai Bus and taxis do not run, and the west trail is closed because Yamashiro no Sato is shut. Use the Ekiura or Hyomai Shrine trails (about 40 minutes each) or the south trail (about 60 minutes). On the Saturday eve and the day after, buses and taxis run to the mid-slope parking lot as usual.
