Why You Should Visit

The grand summer festival of Sumiyoshi Taisha that closes out Osaka's festival season. Long known as "oharai" (purification), it is said to cleanse the whole city. The highlight is the Nagoshiharae rite on July 31, when visitors pass through a huge chinowa ring of reeds to shed misfortune. Food stalls line the approach on July 31 and August 1, drawing crowds from early evening. Admission and the ring-passing are both free, and the shrine is just steps from the station.

* The mikoshi-washing rite (Jul 20) and mikoshi procession (Jul 26) take place before these dates. In the procession the great mikoshi crosses the arched Sorihashi bridge and travels to Shukuin Tongu in Sakai.
[Stalls] Food stalls run July 31 and August 1 from Sumiyoshi Park along the approach (until around 19:30).
[Traffic] Roads including the Kishu Kaido are restricted roughly 16:30–21:30 on July 31 and August 1. Nearby parking is pricey, so public transport is easier.

FAQ

Is there an admission fee?

No. Both worship and the chinowa ring-passing are free and open to all.

When are the food stalls open?

On July 31 and August 1, along the approach from Sumiyoshi Park, open until around 19:30.

Can I go by car?

Roads around the shrine are restricted on July 31 and August 1, and parking is expensive. Coming on foot from Sumiyoshitaisha Station or the Sumiyoshi-toriimae tram stop is easier.
