Why You Should Visit

The festival that closes Osaka's year: locals say the city's festivals "begin with Ebessan and end with Shinno-san." It is the annual grand festival of Sukunahikona Shrine in Doshomachi, Osaka's historic pharmaceutical district, held every year on the fixed dates of November 22 and 23. The signature item is the shinko amulet: a papier-mache tiger and a shrine talisman hung on a five-leaf bamboo sprig. It dates back to the cholera outbreak of 1822, when the drug merchants handed out the tiger with a medicine to ward off disease; people still queue to receive one for family safety and good health. Festival lanterns line the usually quiet office street of Doshomachi-dori and food stalls appear for these two days only. Designated an Osaka City intangible folk cultural property.

FAQ

Is there a fee to visit or to receive the shinko tiger?

Visiting is free. Amulets such as the shinko tiger require an offering; the amount is not published officially, so check at the shrine on the day.

Are there crowded hours?

On the 22nd, entry to the grounds is restricted around 9:45 for the officials' group photo. On both days it is busiest around 14:00–15:00, when entry is also restricted. After 16:00 it is relatively calm.

Can I drive there?

The official site lists no parking. The shrine is about 5 minutes on foot from Kitahama Station and about 10 minutes from Yodoyabashi Station, so the train is the reliable option.
