Why You Should Visit

A promenade-style contemporary dance performance by choreo∞scape, a Kobe-based dance collective, staged in the Tadao Ando–designed Rose Garden building in Kitano. The audience moves through the building during the piece, so what you see depends on where you stand. The latest in the Deep-Sea Dance Encyclopedia series, it draws on Kobe's memory of the earthquake and on deep-sea creatures adapting to darkness and pressure, exploring how bodies shift in response to their surroundings and to others. Children are welcome, and it pairs well with an autumn walk around Kitano.

NOTE

From the organizer (choreo∞scape)

About the performance

"A promenade dance performance that travels through the architecture of Kitano, Kobe.

Kobe-based dance collective choreo ∞ scape will stage QUINTESSENCE by Deep-Sea Dance Encyclopedia vol.2 at the Rose Garden (KITANO THE MAGNET) in Kitano, Kobe, on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, 2026.

The memory of the earthquake etched into Kobe, and the deep sea where no light reaches. When everyday life is suddenly shaken, what rises up from deep within the body? Just as deep-sea creatures adapt to darkness and water pressure, our bodies may sense shifts in the air or someone's presence before words do.

Taking the ways of deep-sea creatures as a clue, this work explores the possibilities of a body that changes through its relationship with its environment and with others.

Making use of the Rose Garden's spaces, it is a promenade performance in which the audience moves from place to place. As bodies, architecture and the audience's gazes intersect, each person experiences a different work."

Organizer's comment

"Autumn in Kitano is lovely for a stroll. This is a promenade contemporary dance performance you can attend with children. We hope you enjoy a moment out of the ordinary in a beautiful building designed by Tadao Ando."
