Why You Should Visit

The autumn festival of Otori Taisha in Sakai's Nishi Ward, held every October, when danjiri floats from the ten towns of the Otori district are hauled through the streets over three days. The highlight is the shrine entry on Saturday morning the 3rd: ten floats charge in one after another through the main torii gate, then leave again from 9:30. After dark the floats run at full speed with lanterns lit along the Otori Hondori shopping street and the old Kumano Kaido, a very different sight from the daytime. Food stalls fill the grounds from the entry until the 4th. Watching is free, and it is a good way to see a danjiri festival with a character of its own, distinct from Kishiwada's.

About a 3-minute walk from the west exit of Otori Station (JR Hanwa Line). The shrine parking lot is closed on 10/3–4 and nearby roads are restricted, so come by train.

FAQ

What time should I arrive to see the shrine entry?

The entry starts at 8:00 on Saturday 10/3, with ten floats passing in turn through the main torii; the exit starts at 9:30. The area in front of the gate gets crowded, so arriving early helps.

Do the floats run at night too?

Yes. Night runs with lanterns lit, pulled at full speed through the shopping street and the old Kumano Kaido, are what Otori is known for. Check the on-site notices for each town's timing.

Is it OK to bring children?

Yes, but the floats turn suddenly, so watch from a safe spot at a distance rather than right beside the route. Food stalls are open from the entry until the 4th.
