Why You Should Visit

An autumn market at O'PAL, a nature-activity centre on the shore of Lake Biwa in Ogoto, Otsu. From 9:30 to 14:00 on Sunday 11 October, popular vendors serve spice curry, chicken wings, hand-drip coffee and more. Built around the themes of food, art and sport, the day also brings a JAL fitness-check booth, a spirited radio-exercise session and a chance to paint freely on a scrapped car. On the same day, dragon boats paddle about 12 km from O'PAL to Lake Biwa Bridge in a long-ride event. Entry is free, and it makes an easy half-day by the lake with children.

About a 12-minute walk from Ogoto-onsen Station on the JR Kosei Line (take a local train; Special Rapid services do not stop there). By car, about 5 minutes from Ogi-Ogoto IC on the Kosei Road.

2nd Biwako Dragon Boat Long Ride Festival: 8:00–16:00, crews paddle from O'PAL to the Biwako Ohashi Kome Plaza roadside station (full course about 12 km / half about 6 km, 20-paddler and 10-paddler boats). Organized by the Shiga Dragon Boat Association and O'PAL Optex. Team entries closed on Aug 30
