Why You Should Visit

An autumn festival devoted to oni (Japanese demons), held every year at Shuten-doji no Sato at the foot of Mt. Oe in Fukuchiyama, the mountain where legend says the warrior Minamoto no Raiko slew the demon king Shuten-doji. 2026 is the 45th edition. A procession of armoured warriors re-enacts the legend, and last year's programme also featured a demon portable shrine, a demon play corner for children and a demon-themed walk. Festivals built entirely around oni are rare in Japan, making this a memorable family day out in rural northern Kyoto. The 33rd Kimen (Demon Mask) Festival is held the same day, with a tent village and the Oni no Sato market selling local food, crafts and specialities.

From Oe Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway Miyafuku Line, take the city bus (Oeyama-no-Ie Line) about 18 minutes to Oeyama-no-Ie. By car, about 35 minutes from Maizuru-Oe IC on the Kyoto Jukan Expressway.
