Namba Yasaka Shrine Tsunahiki Rope Ritual 2027

Why You Should Visit

A special rite held at Namba Yasaka Shrine on the third Sunday of January. Recalling the legend of the enshrined deity Susanoo slaying the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi, a huge rope with eight heads and eight tails is braided into the shape of the serpent and pulled toward the year's lucky direction. The ritual prays for protection from disease and disaster, good harvests and prosperous business, and in 2001 it became the first event designated an intangible folk cultural property by Osaka City. Rope-making starts in the morning and the tug-of-war finishes around noon, at the shrine famous for its giant lion-head hall.

Can visitors join the tug-of-war?

The official information does not mention public participation. Watching from the grounds is free. If you would like to take part, contact the shrine directly.

What time should I arrive to see the rope pulling?

Rope-making begins in the grounds around 8:00, and the pulling is over by around noon. Timings vary from year to year, so arriving earlier in the morning is the safest bet.
