Venue & access: Imamiya Ebisu Shrine, Naniwa Ward, Osaka Just east of Imamiyaebisu Station on the Nankai Koya Line. About an 8-min walk east from Exit 3 of Daikokucho Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line. Traffic restrictions are in place around the shrine during the festival.

Why You Should Visit

A New Year tradition in Osaka's Minami district, held to the chant "Bring your bamboo branch for prosperity in business." The festival runs three days — Yoi-Ebisu on January 9, Hon-Ebisu on the 10th and Nokori-Fuku on the 11th — as worshippers gather at Imamiya Ebisu Shrine to pray for business success and good fortune. The custom is to receive a lucky bamboo branch at the shrine and have the Fukumusume attendants tie on kitcho, small charms shaped like gold coins and money bales. On the 10th, the Hoekago procession carries geisha and Fukumusume in palanquins through Minami to the shrine. Food stalls fill the grounds and the surrounding lanes, and the crowds keep going late into the night.

Visiting the shrine is free. Fees apply for prayers, amulets and the kitcho charms tied to the bamboo branch.

Which of the three days should I go?

Go on the 10th, Hon-Ebisu, if you want to see the Hoekago procession. That day also draws the biggest crowds, so pick the 9th or the 11th if you would rather avoid the crush.

Can I drive there?

Traffic restrictions are in place around the shrine during the festival. Imamiyaebisu Station on the Nankai Koya Line is right beside it, so public transport is the safer bet.
