Why You Should Visit

The autumn festival of Mozu Hachimangu in Sakai's Kita Ward, held around the harvest moon. The draw is the futon-daiko of the shrine's nine parish towns: drum floats about 4 m tall and 2 tonnes heavy, shouldered by 60–70 people, each town taking roughly an hour to work its float around the grounds. The 26th is the entry day, running from late morning to 22:30; the 27th is the exit day, opening with a joint drumming by all nine towns and going on into the night, when the floats are lit by lanterns. Watching is free — a good chance to see a futon-daiko festival, distinct from the danjiri of southern Osaka.

About a 10-minute walk from Mozu Station (JR Hanwa Line) or Mozuhachiman Station (Nankai Koya Line). Roads around the shrine are closed all day and no parking is provided, so come by train.

Does it cost anything to watch?

No, watching is free. You can enter the shrine grounds and see the futon-daiko.

Can I drive there?

Roads around the shrine are closed all day on both days and there is no parking. Walking from JR Mozu or Nankai Mozuhachiman Station is the reliable option.

How late can I see the futon-daiko at night?

The entry on the 26th runs until 22:30 and the exit on the 27th until 22:00. The last towns are Umekita-cho on the 26th and Akahata-cho on the 27th.
