Why You Should Visit

The summer festival of Minatogawa Shrine, affectionately known as "Nankō-san." Over five days when the Kentosai lantern rite and the Kikusui Tenjin Festival overlap, rows of dedicated lanterns light up the grounds while food stalls and traditional monkey performances fill the evenings. Yukata-clad group dances, a kids' dedication stage, a children's mikoshi procession, and sweetfish-catching keep families entertained each day. Set at a downtown shrine within walking distance of Sannomiya and Kobe stations, it offers a cool summer-night festival atmosphere.

Attending and watching are free. Lantern painting costs ¥500 per go and the evening tea ceremony ¥1,000 per seat; all other rites and the food stalls are open to everyone.
Is it enjoyable for families with children?
Yes. There are family-friendly programs each day, including the kids' dedication stage (22–23 Aug), the children's mikoshi procession (25 Aug), and lantern painting.
Does the beer garden run only during the festival?
The evening beer garden runs at Nanko Kaikan from 19 to 29 August, 17:00–21:00 — a longer window than the five festival days. The Nanko plan is ¥5,500 for 120 minutes of all-you-can-eat-and-drink.
