Why You Should Visit

Machidori, short for the Machinaka Irodori project, has been running in central Wakayama City since 2015. For 2026 it moves to the vacant storefronts around Kitaburakuricho Shopping Street, where people hoping to open their own shop run a two-day trial store. Eight shops take part, from a Japanese black tea café to secondhand clothing, used books, vintage furniture and a selection of local Wakayama products. An event-only local currency called "Dori" can be spent at the participating shops and at cooperating stores on the street. A good fit if you enjoy browsing shopping streets and spotting new small businesses before they open for real.
