Why You Should Visit
A one-day tasting event where 12 distilleries — mostly from Kagoshima, plus Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Oita — gather in Akashi with around 30 kinds of honkaku shochu. Pours are 300–400 yen a glass, so you can work through sweet-potato, barley and rice styles and find the one that suits you. The people pouring are from the distilleries themselves, and they'll tell you how each bottle is best drunk. Five Akashi restaurants serve food alongside, so there's always something to eat between glasses. It's held indoors on the 2nd floor of Papios Akashi, right by Akashi Station, so summer heat and rain are less of an issue.
