Why You Should Visit

A one-day tasting event where 12 distilleries — mostly from Kagoshima, plus Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Oita — gather in Akashi with around 30 kinds of honkaku shochu. Pours are 300–400 yen a glass, so you can work through sweet-potato, barley and rice styles and find the one that suits you. The people pouring are from the distilleries themselves, and they'll tell you how each bottle is best drunk. Five Akashi restaurants serve food alongside, so there's always something to eat between glasses. It's held indoors on the 2nd floor of Papios Akashi, right by Akashi Station, so summer heat and rain are less of an issue.

FAQ

Is it all-you-can-drink?
No. Shochu is paid for by ticket at 300–400 yen a glass. A 2,000 yen advance ticket is worth 2,200 yen of shochu tickets.
Can I join without an advance ticket?
Yes. Tickets are sold at the venue on the day and can be used from a single glass.
What about rain or the heat?
The venue is an indoor space on the 2nd floor of Papios Akashi, so rain and midsummer heat are much less of a factor.
Can I drive there?
Since this is a drinking event, anyone driving cannot take part in the tasting. The venue is right at Akashi Station, so coming by train is the safe option.
