cost: Mostly free. Lanterns are 100 yen, limited to 100 a night. The parent-and-child Uji matcha incense workshop is 2,000 yen and includes a 1,000-yen local shopping voucher
Venue & access: Uji Park (Tou-no-shima) Walkable from either Uji Station on the Keihan Uji Line or JR Nara Line. By car the Uji-higashi interchange on the Keiji Bypass is nearest, though no parking or traffic information is published officially.

There are 11 car parks within a 12-minute walk of Uji Park (Tou-no-shima), and 4 public restrooms within 8 minutes. The map shows each with its walking time.

Why You Should Visit

For three nights the island of Tou-no-shima in the Uji River becomes a Tanabata light festival. The National Treasure thirteen-storey stone pagoda is lit, joined by a Milky Way illumination, giant bamboo and a "path where wishes come true". Paper lanterns are sold each night, limited to 100 at 100 yen. Different days add a lit-up Amagase Dam, a night market at Chazuna, an Uji matcha incense workshop, and a craft beer night market on the Ujibashi-dori shopping street.

The incense workshop requires booking, open from 10:00 on 15 July
The Amagase Dam night and digital tours were allocated by lottery and are closed

Notes

The power station interior cannot be visited
The hoko lanterns run in light rain but may be cancelled in severe weather or high water from a dam release

Yes — 100 yen, limited to 100 a night, on sale from 19:30. Numbers are small, so arrive early if you want one.

Which day should I choose?

The illumination and AR spots are the same all three nights. Choose 8 August for the night market and the lit-up dam, or 9 August for the hands-on workshops.
