Why You Should Visit

Koon-ji in Kizumi, Kaizuka, marks 1,300 years of its National Treasure Kannon Hall, the Kuginashi-do ("hall without nails"), with a two-day festival. The temple succeeds Kannon-ji, said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki in 726, and the hall is among the oldest wooden buildings in Osaka Prefecture. On the 22nd, thirty monks hold a memorial service and the main hall is lit up; on the 23rd there are dance and taiko performances. On both days the temple's Important Cultural Property statues, usually viewable by reservation only, can be seen without booking. A good pick for anyone into old wooden architecture, Buddhist art or a local temple festival.
