Why You Should Visit

The Kinomoto edition of Japan Coffee Festival, a coffee event that tours the country. Stands are set up in old houses, a school and a shrine along the shopping street of Kinomoto-juku, a post town on the historic Hokkoku Kaido road. The theme is water: shops brew with five different sources of Kinomoto groundwater, snowmelt from the Ibuki mountains that takes around 40 years to filter through the hills. Over the two days 27 shops from Shiga and as far as Hokkaido and Wakayama take part, and a strip of three coffee tickets lets you compare cups. You can also taste the groundwater itself. A good fit for anyone who likes to wander an old townscape one cup at a time.

FAQ

What water is used for the coffee?
Five different sources of Kinomoto groundwater: snowmelt and other water from the Ibuki mountains, filtered through the hills for around 40 years. The Kinomoto edition uses it every year, and you can taste the water itself on the day.
How do the tickets work?
Exchange your strip of three coffee tickets (1,800 yen in advance, 2,000 yen on the day) at check-in (Koho Library Lib+ south tent or in front of Shusa Ikuhi), then trade them for coffee at the shops. One ticket must be used at the shop you draw from the capsule machine; the other two work anywhere. From the fourth cup, refill tickets (3 for 1,200 yen) are sold in the festival area.
Are the same shops there on both days?
Most shops are there both days, but FUSE COFFEE ROASTERS is Saturday only, and KEN-chan Coffee, Tsuruya Cafe, Akitsu, Wakka Coffee and market wakayama are Sunday only.
