Ishizu Shrine Autumn Festival: Danjiri & Futon-daiko 2026

Why You Should Visit

The autumn grand festival of Ishizu Shrine in Sakai's Sakai Ward, held in early October. It is unusual even within Sakai in that two danjiri floats (Kamiishi-ichinocho and Kamiishizu) and two futon-daiko drum floats (Hamaishi and Midorigaoka) all enter the same shrine. The 3rd brings an early-morning danjiri entry and a night-time futon-daiko entry; the 4th starts with the morning exits, followed by a children's danjiri, a mikoshi procession in the afternoon, and a parade of danjiri, futon-daiko and mikoshi together along the Kumano Kaido. Watching is free, and the shrine is within walking distance of the station, making it an easy way to see a Senshu-style festival up close.

FAQ

When should I go to see both the danjiri and the futon-daiko?

The parade from 15:00 on Sunday 10/4 brings the danjiri, futon-daiko and shrine mikoshi together along the Kumano Kaido. For the shrine entries, the 3rd has the danjiri at 7:00 and the futon-daiko at 20:00; on the 4th everything is packed between 7:30 and 8:45 in the morning.

Does it cost anything to watch?

No, it is free. You can watch freely on the shrine grounds or along the Kumano Kaido.

Can I bring children?

Yes. A children's danjiri runs at 9:30 on Sunday the 4th and many families attend. Floats change direction suddenly, so keep your distance while they are moving.
