Ikuta Shrine Nagoshi Oharae & Sentosai Lantern Rite 2026

Why You Should Visit

The summer purification rite of Ikuta Shrine, an ancient shrine in the heart of Sannomiya. Impurities unknowingly accumulated over the past half-year are transferred to paper effigies (hitogata) and cleansed, with prayers for health and long life. A chinowa grass ring stands in the grounds from late June through July 15 for visitors to pass through. The Oharae rite is followed by the Michiae festival and the Sentosai, in which candles are lit from a sacred flame, filling the evening grounds with light.
