Why You Should Visit

The summer purification rite of Ikuta Shrine, an ancient shrine in the heart of Sannomiya. Impurities unknowingly accumulated over the past half-year are transferred to paper effigies (hitogata) and cleansed, with prayers for health and long life. A chinowa grass ring stands in the grounds from late June through July 15 for visitors to pass through. The Oharae rite is followed by the Michiae festival and the Sentosai, in which candles are lit from a sacred flame, filling the evening grounds with light.

Order of rites:

Nagoshi Oharae: transferring impurities to paper effigies
Michiae: rite to keep misfortune out of the town
Sentosai: lighting candles from a sacred flame for good health
The chinowa ring stands on the approach from late June to July 15
