Why You Should Visit

A morning crab festival held in the auction market of Hamasaka Fishing Port, where snow crab (Matsuba-gani) is landed. Its two main draws are a seko crab corner, where crabs are lowered by crane into a giant pot, boiled and sold on the spot, and a dining corner where the port's "crab sommeliers" prepare Matsuba crab. The stage runs through the morning with a local high school's Kirin Shishimai lion dance, dance performances and a seko crab meat-picking speed contest, closing with a mochi-maki rice-cake throw. A good fit for anyone who wants to buy and eat Hamasaka crab right at the port, or for families looking for a winter food festival.
