Price & booking: Free (shuttle buses are also free) No sign-up needed for either the open day or the free shuttle buses.
Venue & access: JR West Aboshi Rolling Stock Center Free shuttle buses from JR Aboshi Station and Aioi Station (last bus to the venue leaves both stations at 13:00). No parking at or near the venue; drivers should park at the Taishi Asuka Furusato Matsuri grounds (Maruo Kenchiku Sogo Park), held the same day, and take the shuttle.

Why You Should Visit

JR West opens its Aboshi Rolling Stock Center, normally off-limits, for one day. Watch a train car being lifted and moved through the air by a giant crane, see inspection and car-washing work up close, and try a hands-on inspection activity. There are displays of the 225 series, DD51 and DEC743 series, rides on a miniature steam locomotive, introductions to railway jobs (operations, track, electrical and rolling stock), and a merchandise corner. Free entry with no sign-up, and free shuttle buses run from Aboshi Station and elsewhere. Great for train fans and families with kids who love trains.

Shuttle buses:

Aboshi Station ⇔ venue: to the venue 9:00–13:00, about 10 per hour; back 11:00–16:00 (last from the venue 16:00)
Aioi Station ⇔ venue: to the venue 9:00–13:00, about 2 per hour; back 11:00–14:00 (last from the venue 14:50)
Maruo Kenchiku Sogo Park ⇔ venue: 9:00–14:00, about 4 per hour (last to the venue 14:35, last to the park 14:50)
Maruo Kenchiku Sogo Park ⇔ Aboshi Station: 9:00–15:00, about 2 per hour (last to Aboshi 14:50)
On foot, enter via the Main Gate or West Gate. Bicycles and motorbikes use the temporary bike parking inside the center

On the day:

Held in light rain, cancelled in severe weather. Content may change depending on weather and train operations
Drones are not allowed. Please don't shoot with tripods, stepladders or selfie sticks
Light meals are available in limited numbers. No alcohol may be brought in, and visitors who have been drinking will be refused entry

FAQ

Do I need to book or get a ticket?

No. Both the open day and the free shuttle buses need no sign-up.

Can I drive there?

There is no parking at or near the venue. Park at the Taishi Asuka Furusato Matsuri grounds (Maruo Kenchiku Sogo Park), held the same day, and take the shuttle bus.

Can I go in the afternoon?

The last shuttle to the venue leaves Aboshi and Aioi stations at 13:00. After that, come on foot or by bike, or take the bus from Maruo Kenchiku Sogo Park (last one to the venue at 14:35).

Is it held if it rains?

It goes ahead in light rain and is cancelled in severe weather.
