Why You Should Visit

A food festival devoted entirely to sweet potatoes takes over Taiyo-no-Hiroba Plaza in Osaka Castle Park for ten days. Fourteen shops from across Japan sell around 30 dishes, from plain roasted yakiimo to Japanese-style parfaits, tempura, crepes and even sweet-potato kimchi stew. This year's theme is "gap textures": crunchy, crispy elements paired with the soft, sticky or fluffy sweet potato inside. Shops from Osaka's Namba and Shinsaibashi and from Kobe's Sannomiya line up beside specialists from Kyoto, Okayama, Saitama and Tokyo. Admission is free, payment is cashless only, and pets are welcome. It is steps from JR Osakajokoen Station, so it pairs easily with an autumn walk around the castle.
