Why You Should Visit
Taishi Town's autumn tradition lights up the Takenouchi Kaido, said to be Japan's oldest official road, with around 2,500 lanterns. The venue runs about 2.3 km from the Kasuga-nishi intersection to the Chikatsu Asuka no Sato Taishi roadside station, and the Ise stone lanterns, Jizo halls and temples along the road are illuminated too. Before the 5 pm lighting there is a brass band festival at the town hall, and after dark the roadside fills with eaves galleries, the Marche de Taishi night market, zazen and sutra sessions at temples and a stamp rally, all run by local residents. Admission is free, suited to anyone who wants to stroll an ancient road by lantern light, and to families with children curious about the night market.
