Why You Should Visit

The autumn grand festival of Sone Tenmangu, a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. Highlights are the Takewari rite, in which flag-topped bamboo poles over 10 m long are slammed against the ground until they split, and the Hitotsumono rite, where a child with the character 八 on the forehead rides into the shrine on horseback wearing a flowered hat. Brightly colored futon-yatai floats with stacked quilted roofs clash in the grounds, and after dusk the lit-up floats glow against the night sky. One of the Banshu autumn festivals.
