Why You Should Visit

A ten-night light-art exhibition along the riverside of Nakanoshima Park in central Osaka, from the Rose Garden to the area under the Hanshin Expressway. Four works are set against the autumn roses and the Nakanoshima skyline: K.L.V FIELD, a kinetic field of glowing spheres rising and falling on fine wires; Bloom with You, a bouquet you can pick up that lights the roses around you; Water Bridge, which wraps Barazono Bridge in rippling light; and Prism in the Air, a new piece that projects light into mist to form a rainbow. On Oct 23–25 the lawn hosts a hot-air-balloon night glow with live jazz, R&B and soul. Free, no booking, and a short walk from Kitahama or Naniwabashi Station, so it suits an evening stroll or a date after work.

Right by Naniwabashi Station on the Keihan Nakanoshima Line, or about 5 minutes on foot from Kitahama Station (Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line / Keihan Main Line). The park has no car park; use paid parking nearby.

There are 12 car parks within a 12-minute walk of Nakanoshima Park (Rose Garden to the area under the Hanshin Expressway), and 1 public restrooms within 8 minutes. The map shows each with its walking time.

Works

K.L.V FIELD (Rose Garden, west): a kinetic light installation of glowing spheres rising and falling on ultra-fine wires, linked to the landscape to form large waves of light
Bloom with You (Rose Garden, east): pick up a glowing rose bouquet and the light spreads outward, lighting the roses around you
Water Bridge (Barazono Bridge): an arch of light that wraps the whole bridge in rippling projections and lighting
Prism in the Air (near the Hanshin Expressway overpass): a new work that projects special light into mist, drawing rainbow colours through refraction and reflection

Night Glow & Music

Night glow: balloon set-up begins at 19:00, deflated and packed away around 21:30; you can watch from inflation onward
Field live: 18:20, 19:20 and 20:20 each day (40 minutes each), with jazz, R&B and soul artists from the Kansai scene
Wine bar: Le Plus (Toyonaka) sells natural wine, food and patissier-made sweets

On opening night (Oct 16) a small fireworks display is planned on the river near the east tip of Nakanoshima, in front of Hachikenya river station (details from the Suito Osaka Consortium)

Rain

The light art runs in rain; in severe weather works may be moved or switched off
The night glow uses hot-air balloons and may be cancelled without notice on the day in rain or wind

FAQ

Is it free? Do I need to book?

Both the light art and Night Glow & Music are free to view, with no booking required. You only pay if you buy drinks or food at the wine bar on the lawn.

Can I see it in the rain?

The light art is shown even in rain, though works may be moved or switched off in severe weather. The hot-air-balloon night glow on Oct 23–25 may be cancelled without notice on the day if it rains or is windy.

How long does it take to see everything?

The four works are spread through the park from the Rose Garden to the expressway overpass and can be seen on one walk. On night-glow days, plan your stay around the 40-minute live sets on the lawn.
