Why You Should Visit

Once a year, Rokkomichi Minami Park just south of JR Rokkomichi Station fills with handmade lanterns. Children from 26 nurseries and community centres across Nada Ward make paper lanterns, joined by lights made from sake bottles, a nod to Nada's sake-brewing heritage, all lit from 17:30. The afternoon has play booths for kids and an exhibition on the old erosion-control works on Mt. Maya; from 18:00 there is bon odori dancing that anyone can join. The event began in 2003 and took its current name in 2005, ten years after the Great Hanshin Earthquake. This year Nada Ward's new mascot Nyada makes its first appearance.

About 5 min walk south from JR Rokkomichi Station, or 5 min north from Hanshin Shin-zaike Station. No event parking for cars or bicycles; come by public transport.

Led by the Nada Ward Women's Association; the yagura tower is designed by Kobe University's TEAM NADA

FAQ

What happens if it rains?

Only the lantern display moves to the next day, Sept 27 (Sun) 18:00–19:30. The kids' booths, exhibition, bon odori and mascot appearance are cancelled. Check with Nada Ward Office on the day.

When are the lanterns lit?

Lanterns are lit from 17:30 to 19:30. Around 18:30, when it gets dark and the bon odori is on, is the best time.

Can I drive there?

There is no event parking for cars or bicycles. The park is a 5-minute walk from JR Rokkomichi Station, so the train is easiest.

Is it good for children?

Yes. From 15:00 to 17:30 there are play booths such as ring toss and super-ball scooping, and the lanterns themselves are made by local children. Children of elementary-school age and under need a guardian.
