Why You Should Visit

The annual grand festival of Omiya Hachimangu in central Miki, held on the Saturday and Sunday just before Japan's Sports Day. This year the eve festival (Yomiya) is on the 10th and the main day (Hirumiya) on the 11th. Eight ornate festival floats (yatai) from the parish neighbourhoods are carried up a flight of about 85 stone steps, pitched at roughly 21 degrees, into the shrine grounds (miyairi), and later back down again (miyade). This climb-and-descent is said to be unique even within the Banshu region and is designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Miki City. The floats themselves showcase local carpentry, embroidery, wood carving and metalwork.

When is the festival held each year?

On the Saturday and Sunday just before Sports Day (the second Monday of October). In 2026 the eve festival is on Sat 10 October and the main day on Sun 11 October.

What time can I see the floats climb the steps?

Miyairi is scheduled from around 16:35 on Saturday and around 16:00 on Sunday; miyade starts around 19:05 on Saturday and 18:55 on Sunday. Times are approximate, so arrive early.
