Why You Should Visit

A one-day Christmas market in Kyotamba, now in its fourth year since starting in 2023. It fills the Children's Field at Kyoto Prefectural Tamba Nature Park with around 20 food and craft stalls built around local Kyotamba produce, a Christmas tree stacked from wooden crates, bonfires and live music from artists with ties to the town. After dark, some 2,000 hand-painted lanterns light up the field, and this year about 100 tethered LED sky lanterns are planned to rise over the park. A good pick for families who want to stay from lunchtime into the evening.

NOTE

Highlights
  • A Christmas tree and campfire dome built from around 500 wooden crates
  • About 20 food and craft stalls, mostly using Kyotamba ingredients
  • A live stage with artists connected to Kyotamba, plus the local radio show GREEN GREEN RADIO
  • Bonfires and branded log stools to sit on
  • Around 2,000 lanterns hand-painted by local children and university students, lit up after dark
Sky lanterns
  • About 100 LED sky lanterns are planned to be released together after sunset. They are lifted with helium and tethered with a few metres of string, so you reel them back in and take them home
  • You can decorate your lantern with markers; decoration is handled at the HQ tent until 13:00 on the day
  • The cost (about ¥540,000) is being raised by crowdfunding. The campaign is All-in (goal ¥500,000), so it goes ahead and rewards are delivered even if the goal is not reached. No condition has been stated that the sky lanterns will be dropped if the goal is missed
Lantern path
  • About 250 lanterns are planned along the dark road from National Route 9 to the venue

※Organised by the Kyotamba Christmas Market Executive Committee (Kyotamba Town, NPO Kyotamba Innovation Lab and the Kyoto Prefectural Tamba Nature Park Support Association). Updates are posted on Kyotamba Innovation Lab's official Instagram
