Why You Should Visit
A five-day exhibition on the 5th floor of the Museum of Kyoto bringing together works by the Kyo no Meiko, master craftspeople honored by the Governor of Kyoto Prefecture, alongside pieces by Kyomono Certified Artisans, the next generation of makers. Co-hosted by Kyoto Prefecture and the Kyoto Takumi-kai since 1971, it covers Nishijin weaving, Kyo-yuzen dyeing, Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki ceramics, Buddhist altars, lacquerware and more. Every day there are gallery talks on a different craft, and on the weekend there are live demonstrations of Kyoto inlay and altar making plus paid hands-on sessions in joinery and Nishijin weaving. Admission is free, and a tea service (500 yen) is offered in the hall. The venue is three minutes from Karasuma Oike Station, easy to fit into a walk around Sanjo and Karasuma.
