Why You Should Visit

Kitano Tenmangu holds its shrine fair on the 25th of every month, when stalls line the grounds and approach for the Tenjin-ichi market. The 25 December fair, the last of the year, is called Shimai-Tenjin and, together with the first fair in January, draws around 150,000 people. The shrine also hands out New Year items such as Ofuku-ume pickled plums, celebratory chopsticks and otoso spiced sake, so many visitors come to prepare for the new year. A good way to close out the year with a shrine visit and a browse through the stalls.

NOTE

New Year items

  • Ofuku-ume: lucky pickled plums from the shrine's own trees. Handed out from Kotohajime on 13 December until they run out
  • Celebratory chopsticks and otoso: handed out around Shimai-Tenjin

After the new year

  • The first fair on 25 January, Hatsu-Tenjin, is just as busy

FAQ

How is Shimai-Tenjin different from the monthly fair?
25 December is the last fair of the year and, with the January fair, the busiest. It also coincides with the New Year items such as Ofuku-ume, chopsticks and otoso.
Can I still get Ofuku-ume on the day?
It is handed out from 13 December until around Shimai-Tenjin, but only while stocks last, so going earlier is safer.
