Why You Should Visit
Once a year, the wholesalers and makers of Kishu lacquerware, made in Kainan, Wakayama, sell directly to visitors. At Kainan Hareame, the Great Lacquerware Market lines up bowls, trays, chopsticks and tiered jubako boxes, alongside an Umaimono Yokocho food alley run by the local restaurant association and other food stalls. Uruwashi-kan, the home base of Kishu lacquerware, holds special sales and maki-e decorating workshops, plus a Mini 4WD race on Nov 8. Over the same two days, the Household Goods Festival brings local kitchen and household goods makers together at Kainan City General Gymnasium, and free shuttle buses link the venues. A good trip if you want to pick out everyday tableware and kitchen tools where they are made.
