Why You Should Visit

For two days, the Mt. Katsuragi Ropeway in Gose, Nara runs late so you can walk the summit's susuki (Japanese pampas grass) highlands at dusk. The ropeway, which usually stops at 17:00, takes passengers up until 19:30, letting you watch the golden grass change color as the sun sets and night falls. Halloween decorations line part of the route from Katsuragi-sanjo Station toward the summit, and from around dusk lanterns are lent out to each group in limited numbers. The Shirakaba Shokudo restaurant on the summit also stays open late. The event itself is free; you only pay the ropeway fare.

FAQ

Is there an entry fee?
The event itself is free. You reach the summit by ropeway (round trip: adults ¥1,500, elementary school children ¥750).
How cold is it on the summit?
The summit is said to be about 5°C colder than at ground level, and it gets cooler after sunset, so bring a jacket. Some paths are unpaved.
Can I park if I drive?
Car parks No. 2 and No. 3 near the ropeway (¥1,000) are open until 21:00 and locked at 21:00. Spaces are limited and traffic is expected, so parking near Kintetsu Gose Station and taking the bus is also suggested.
