Why You Should Visit

Joruri-ji, a temple in the hills of Kamo in Kizugawa, southern Kyoto Prefecture, opens the first floor of its National Treasure three-story pagoda for a short autumn period. The pagoda is normally closed; during the opening you can see its principal image, a seated Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha, Important Cultural Property). The autumn opening runs from October 31 to November 8 and takes place only in fine weather. The hidden Kichijoten statue (Important Cultural Property) is also on view in the same season, so this is the window to see both. A good pick for anyone who wants an unhurried look at Buddhist sculpture and old temple architecture near the Nara border.

FAQ

Can I see inside the pagoda on a rainy day?
No. The pagoda's first floor is opened only in fine weather, so even during the period it stays closed on rainy or poor-weather days. Aim for a clear day.
Can I see the Kichijoten statue on the same day?
Yes. The hidden Kichijoten statue is on view from October 1 to November 30, which covers the whole pagoda opening period.
What time should I arrive by?
Viewing hours are 9:00–17:00, and admission to the main hall closes at 16:30. The temple is reached by community bus from the station, so plan around the bus times and aim to arrive earlier in the day.
