Why You Should Visit

Himeji is one of Japan's main leather-tanning towns, and for five days Otemae Park at the foot of Himeji Castle fills with locally tanned hides and the shoes, bags and small goods made from them. Besides browsing and buying leather and leather products, you can try making a small item at the leather-craft corner. On Nov 3 ("Good Leather Day") there are commemorative gifts for couples celebrating their third, or "leather", wedding anniversary. The Himeji National Pottery Fair and the Himeji Confectionery Festival run on the same dates, so you can combine leather, tableware and sweets in one visit.
