Why You Should Visit

A family-friendly afternoon at the Chuo Ward Cultural Center in Sannomiya that explains how a jazz session works while you listen. In the first half, DJ Penny spins records and walks through why the same tune can sound completely different depending on who plays it; in the second half, a piano–bass–drums trio improvises on jazz standards. The multipurpose room gets a mirror ball and decorations, and you are free to dance or just sit and listen. Babies are welcome from age 0, strollers are fine, and you can come and go during the show — an easy first jazz experience for families.

NOTE

From the organizer (Kobe City Chuo Ward Cultural Center)

"Jazz is music that takes on many different expressions depending on the performers, tempo and arrangement, even when it is the same tune. In this event, with commentary and demonstrations by a DJ/navigator, we introduce in a fun, easy-to-follow way how a jazz session comes into being and how the musicians communicate with one another through sound.

The program has two parts: 'DJ Time', where you enjoy jazz on records, and 'Session Time', where you experience live playing by musicians. The venue will be fitted with a mirror ball and decorations, transforming the Cultural Center's multipurpose room into a special musical space.

Children can join from age 0, and you are free to come and go during the show. Move your body to the music or sit back and listen — enjoy jazz in your own style."

Program

Event highlights

1. Commentary that beginners can enjoy

A DJ/navigator guides the show, explaining in plain terms what a 'session' is and why the same tune can sound different.

2. DJ time with records

Enjoy records selected especially for the day. Stand up and dance, sway to the rhythm — join in any way you like.

3. A real session right in front of you

Feel the appeal of improvisation through live playing by professionals, centered on jazz standards. Watch the musicians interact up close and hear music being born on the spot.

4. Open to ages 0 and up

Families with small children are welcome, and strollers are OK. A chance for parents and children to casually experience culture and the arts.

FAQ

Can I bring a baby?
Yes. Children are welcome from age 0, strollers can come in, and you are free to step out and return during the show. Preschoolers are free.
Can I go without a reservation?
A reservation is required and seats are limited to the first 200. Bookings close at 12:00 on the day, and you pay at the venue rather than when booking.
Do I need to know about jazz?
Yes. The DJ/navigator explains things from 'what is a session?' onward, so it is built for beginners. Listening to 'Days of Wine and Roses' and 'Take the "A" Train' beforehand makes it easier to hear how the live version differs.
