Why You Should Visit
Held every year on December 14 — the anniversary of the famous raid of the 47 ronin — this festival takes place in Yamashina, the Kyoto district where their leader Oishi Kuranosuke lived quietly before the raid. Local residents dressed as the 47 loyal retainers set out from Bishamondo Temple in the morning, stop for performances at Tobu Bunka Kaikan, then continue through town to Iwayaji Temple, linked to Oishi, and Oishi Shrine, where he is enshrined. You can catch the procession anywhere along the route, so it is easy to see just one section from around Yamashina Station. A good year-end outing for anyone curious about Japan's best-known samurai revenge story.
