Why You Should Visit

An evening illumination held during the autumn foliage season at Suzaku Garden, the Japanese garden inside Umekoji Park just west of Kyoto Station. About 150 maples and red pines are lit up, and the shallow pond called Mizukagami ("water mirror") reflects the leaves upside down on its surface, a favorite shot for photographers. Unlike many temple light-ups, it is within walking distance of Kyoto Station, so it fits easily after a day at the Kyoto Aquarium or the Kyoto Railway Museum next door. At ¥600 for adults, it is an affordable way to end a day of sightseeing with night-time autumn colors.
