Why You Should Visit

Toji, a World Heritage temple within walking distance of Kyoto Station, opens its grounds after dark during the autumn-foliage season. The maples are illuminated and the National Treasure five-story pagoda rises over the lit garden. The Kondo (main hall) and Kodo (lecture hall) are also opened at night, letting you walk all the way around the Kodo's three-dimensional mandala of Buddhist statues conceived by Kukai. It runs every evening without closing days, so it works well as the last stop of a day spent at other foliage spots.

FAQ

Do I need a reservation?
The official site lists no advance booking; tickets are sold at the gate on the day. Admission ends at 21:00, so allow extra time if walking from Kyoto Station.
Does the night ticket include the inside of the pagoda?
No. The night ticket covers the illumination and the Kondo and Kodo only. The pagoda's first floor is opened in the daytime (8:00-17:00) during the same period for a separate fee, and there is no combined ticket.
Is it held in the rain?
The official site says there are no closing days during the period. No specific policy for severe weather is published, so check the official site on stormy days before heading out.
How much is it for children of junior-high age and under?
The official night-viewing price list shows only adult and high-school rates; no rate for junior-high age and under is stated. Check with the temple beforehand if you are bringing children.
