Why You Should Visit

An outdoor goma fire ritual held every year on Culture Day (November 3) at Chogosonshi-ji, the Bishamonten temple on Mt. Shigi. After an altar is set up and the ritual ground purified, brushwood and goma sticks are burned to consume evil deeds and illness, and then participants walk barefoot over the remaining embers to pray for good fortune and good health. Registration is at a special tent near the Nokyodo hall. Around the same time, the temple's treasure hall shows the National Treasure Shigisan Engi Emaki scroll, so it pairs well with a half-day visit to the mountain temple.
