Why You Should Visit

An autumn festival themed on Kutsuki's local food, held at the roadside station in Kutsuki, an old post town on the Saba Kaido (Mackerel Road) between Wakasa Bay and Kyoto. Stalls serve Kutsuki's home cooking, from the classic saba-zushi (pressed mackerel sushi) to mackerel somen and salt-grilled ayu, and freshly harvested Kutsuki rice is on sale. There is the traditional mochi-maki (rice-cake scattering), a stage with taiko drumming and a wind band, and hands-on straw-craft and picture-letter booths. Entry is free and it goes ahead rain or shine, making it an easy stop on an autumn drive along the Mackerel Road.
