Why You Should Visit

For one week, Nara's old town opens up townhouses and cultural properties that are normally closed to the public. Under "Miru" (special openings), eight places can be visited without booking, including the former Hosoda Residence, the courtyard garden of the Sano Residence, Imanishi-ke Shoin, Gangoji Temple and the former home of novelist Shiga Naoya. Twenty bookable programs run alongside: "Shiru" talks and workshops led by locals, and "Meguru" guided walks. Now in its sixth year, it suits visitors who want to step off the Nara Park route and wander the lanes of the old merchant quarter.
