Why You Should Visit
Built in 1909 as the main hall of Nara Women's Higher Normal School, this two-story wooden half-timbered building is a National Important Cultural Property, along with its main gate and guardhouse. For one week it opens to everyone for free, with no booking needed. This is the first autumn opening since renovation work that began in August 2025, and the upstairs auditorium still holds its original benches and the "Hundred-Year Piano." All four faculties put on displays, from old photographs to taxidermy and skeletal specimens and vintage sewing machines. It is a five-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, an easy stop on the way to or from Nara Park.
NOTE
Displays by faculty
- Letters: "Nara Women's Higher Normal School students in old photographs" and Western language and culture research materials centered on the collection of former president Tamura. Graduation albums and group photos from the normal-school era are shown for the first time, alongside actual teaching specimens that appear in the photos
- Science: taxidermy, skeletal and wet specimens, plus posters on recent research
- Human Life and Environment: clothing teaching specimens and related materials, sewing machines, a Connection Machine board and old tableware
- Engineering: posters on collaborations with companies and art museums
Mini concert
- Nara Women's University students give a mini concert daily, 12:20–12:50
About the building
- Designed by Yamamoto Jihei, head of the building department at Kyoto Imperial University. Half-timbered walls in a style common in Northern Europe, topped with a lantern tower and dormer windows
- Seven rooms off a central corridor on the ground floor; the whole upper floor is a pillar-free auditorium with a double coved ceiling and clerestory windows
- Designated an Important Cultural Property on December 27, 1994, together with the main gate and guardhouse. Renovation of the exterior walls, roof tiles, leaks and air conditioning ran from August 2025 to March 2026
When it opens
- Usually open for about a week each spring (late April–early May) and autumn (late October–early November). The autumn 2025 opening was cancelled for renovation
