Why You Should Visit

A Little New Year (koshogatsu) fire ritual held on Tobihino Field in the grounds of Kasuga Taisha. A 5 m square, 3 m high fire pit is built and old talismans, amulets and shimenawa straw ropes brought to the shrine over New Year are burned in thanks for the year's protection. You can also bring items directly to the venue on the day. The flame then becomes the source fire for the Wakakusa-yama Burning that evening, so you can see the bonfire in the afternoon and the hillside burning at dusk in a single day in Nara Park.
