Why You Should Visit

The campus festival of Koyasan University, a Shingon Buddhist university on the summit of Mount Koya. This year's theme is "Inori" (prayer). Over two days you'll find a saito goma fire ritual by the student procession club, a mochi-maki rice-cake scattering, a "monk café" staffed by monks, festival-only goshuin temple stamps, a calligraphy exhibition and a Buddhism and Koyasan quiz, plus a tea ceremony and kyudo archery taster. A good add-on if you're visiting Koyasan in the autumn leaf season and want to see the temple town's university open its doors.
