Why You Should Visit

Every November 3 (Culture Day), Kasuga Taisha presents gagaku, Japan's ancient court music and dance, on the Floating Stage over the pond in its Manyo Botanical Garden. The Nanto Gakuso ensemble performs kangen (instrumental pieces) and bugaku (dances) that have been handed down at the shrine for centuries. It is open to anyone who pays garden admission, so no ticket is needed. Earlier the same day, the Meiji-sai ceremony starts at 10:00 and is followed by a bugaku offering in the Ringo-no-niwa courtyard, which means you can catch gagaku twice in one visit to Nara.
