Why You Should Visit
Heisei Onna-hoko Sayane-kai, Japan's only all-female Gion-bayashi ensemble, marks its 30th anniversary by raising the Heisei Onna-hoko float in the plaza in front of Kyoto City Hall for the first time in ten years. The raising work from September 17 is open for anyone to watch, and from the evening of the 19th through the 21st the women musicians perform Gion-bayashi from atop the float. On the 20th and 21st the float opens to the public and nine walk-up visitors a day can try the instruments. Six days to hear a hoko's festival music played by women, something the Gion Matsuri procession itself does not offer, right beside a subway station.
