Why You Should Visit

A Kinokawa City festival honouring Hanaoka Seishu, the Edo-period doctor who was the first in the world to perform breast cancer surgery under general anaesthesia. Centred on the main venue, Michi-no-Eki Seishu no Sato, the "Seishu Historical Parade" recreates the wedding procession of his wife Kae and sets off from the old Nate-juku Honjin. Storytellers give talks at the nearby Shunrinken building, and a photo contest also runs. The neighbouring Wakayama Prefectural College of Nursing holds its own school festival the same day, adding to the atmosphere.

About a 30-minute walk from JR Nate Station on the Wakayama Line. By car, about 10 minutes from the Kinokawa-higashi IC on the Kinokawa Expressway. On the day, shuttle transport runs to the venue from temporary car parks such as the nursing college ground and Naka Junior High School ground.

Can I drive there?

The area is expected to be busy on the day, so using a temporary car park such as the nursing college or Naka Junior High School ground and taking the shuttle to the venue is recommended.

Where can I watch the historical parade?

It departs the old Nate-juku Honjin at 14:00 and proceeds toward Michi-no-Eki Seishu no Sato. It can be watched along the route and around the venue.
