Venue & access: Nankinmachi / Nankinmachi Square About a 5-minute walk from the east exit of JR/Hanshin Motomachi Station. Cars cannot enter Nankinmachi itself, so use the coin parking lots nearby.

Why You Should Visit

Chushusetsu is Nankinmachi's autumn festival, marking the 15th night of the eighth lunar month when the harvest moon is admired and the harvest celebrated. Started in 1998, it is the district's second-largest event after the Lunar New Year festival and runs for three days. Day one brings the food event Gekko Chubo; days two and three bring traditional Chinese stage performances at Nankinmachi Square. Throughout the festival there is the Fukkyu prize draw where every ticket wins, a shop-wide Mid-Autumn fair, an altar to visit, and mooncakes on sale. Watching is free, so it pairs easily with a street-food stroll.

From 25 to 27 September, 32 member shops of the Nankinmachi association offer limited dishes and goods. Prices include tax. Quantity limits are shown per day or for the whole period. Opening hours vary by shop.

Fukudama lottery: 500 yen a go, no blanks; prizes include shopping vouchers of 5,000 / 3,000 / 1,000 / 500 yen valid at all union shops (ends when the day's stock runs out)
Limited mooncakes: lotus-seed paste with salted egg yolk 900 yen / red-bean 700 yen / lotus-seed 700 yen
Altar: set up in the square's pavilion, incense on sale

From 15 Sept, about 2,500 Lawson stores across the Kinki region sell four items supervised by Nankinmachi chefs (sesame fried-rice onigiri 203 yen / onigiri bento, Chinese sticky-rice style 559 yen / egg-tart pie 216 yen / ma lai go with red-bean paste 167 yen)

FAQ

Does it cost anything to watch?

Watching the stage performances and visiting the altar are free. Food, mooncakes and other goods are paid. The Fukudama prize draw is 500 yen a go with no blanks, and incense for the altar is 100 yen a stick.

Do I need a reservation?

It is open to walk-in visitors, and no advance booking or numbered tickets have been announced. Some hours get crowded, so arriving early is safer if you want a spot near Nankinmachi Square.

Is it suitable for families with children?

It takes place in an open street district and the stage is free to watch, so children are welcome. Nankinmachi's lanes fill up on weekends, so carrying a small child or holding hands is easier than pushing a stroller.
