Why You Should Visit
An architecture open-house festival with about 150 modern buildings across 13 areas of Kyoto. A passport lets you freely visit 61 of them, including buildings normally closed to the public. Passport openings run on two weekends: the first period (Oct 31–Nov 1) covers 32 buildings in nine areas such as Kitayama, Nishijin, Okazaki and around Kyoto Station, and the second period (Nov 7–8) covers 29 buildings in eight areas including Kinugasa-Kitano and Higashiyama, so the line-up changes between weekends. About 120 guided tours led by architects and researchers are also offered (separate fee, advance booking). A good pick for anyone into modern architecture or exploring the city on foot.
