Why You Should Visit

Once a year, Kobe Shushinkan — the brewery behind Fukuju sake in Higashinada — throws open its doors to celebrate the new season's sake. The whole site becomes a festival: freshly pressed new sake, limited releases, sake-lees soup and amazake, plus food stalls with grilled seafood and yakitori. Brewery workers lead free guided tours inside the kura (advance sign-up), and there are traditional brewery rituals such as replacing the sugidama cedar ball, a kagami-biraki barrel opening and Nada's sake-brewing work songs. Admission is free — a good chance to taste Nada's new sake right where it is made.
